Lung Cancer
Lung cancer is a major health issue in the United States. In the next year, over 220,000 people will be diagnosed with lung cancer. Lung cancer is the second leading cause of cancer and the leading cause of cancer death in both women and men.
The state of Kentucky leads the nation in lung cancer incidence and mortality. Of the nearly 3,771 Kentucky residents who were diagnosed with lung cancer in 2009, 344 or 9% were diagnosed &/or received treatment at Central Baptist.
Doctors cannot always explain why one person gets cancer and another does not. We do know that there are some risk factors and behaviors that make it more likely to develop lung cancer. One of the strongest risk factors for lung cancer is tobacco smoke – both in smokers and in people who are exposed to secondhand smoke. There are cases of lung cancer in people who are not smokers or who are not exposed to secondhand smoke.
