Colorectal Cancer
Colon and rectal cancer are often referred to as colorectal cancer. Both types of cancer begin with malignant cells that develop and divide in that part of the gastrointestinal tract; colon cancer cells grow in the colon and rectal cancer cells grow in the rectum. When found early, the five year survival rate for colorectal cancer is 90%. With cancer screening tests, abnormal cells can be found before they become cancerous, making colorectal cancer the most preventable cancer in the United States.

US Statistics:
  • 106,100 new cases of colon cancer are diagnosed annually
  • 40,870 new cases of rectal cancer are diagnosed annually
  • Colorectal cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer related deaths
  • Colorectal cancer is the 3rd most common cancer
American Cancer Society Screening Guidelines:
  • Age 50 or over: Everyone age 50 and over should have a colonoscopy. If no polyps are found, the colonoscopy should be repeated every 10 years.
  • Colorectal polyps: If colorectal polyps are identified at any age, screening should be repeated within 3-5 years.
  • Family history of colorectal cancer: If you have a family history of colorectal cancer, please consider visiting our genetic counselor to discuss your cancer risks.
Colorectal Cancer Screening Tests:
  • Flexible sigmoidoscopy
  • Colonoscopy
  • Double contrast barium enema
  • Fecal occult blood test
